TF2 Spy-Sniper Update – Unlock Huntsman with Steam Achievement Manager

sniperupdate.jpg

Well Valve has announced the Sniper Update Spy Update, due out Tuesday, May 19th Thursday, May 21st. Of course there will be unlockables, the first announced Tuesday, is the Huntsman Bow. And also the Dead Ringer and Cloak and Dagger watches. These should be unlockable using the Steam Achievement Manager 4.0. Steam Achievement Manager 5.1.

In theory this should work for thes sniper unlockables. Valve has been playing around with unique items (hats) which might indicate a shift away from achievement-based weapons earning such as the Force-A-Nature (FAN), Backburner, Heavy and Medic unlocks. But for now we still have the steam achievement manager.

How do you use it? Follow below the cut! :

  1. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 if you do not already have it installed.
  2. Download Steam Achievement Manager.
  3. Extract it to a directory that is convenient to you, but not your Steam directory. It’s a ZIP file, if you don’t know how to extract a ZIP file then you probably shouldn’t be trying to use this tool.
  4. Run Steam if it is not already running.
  5. Exit any active VAC protected games if any are running. While this tool does not directly interact with any game itself, it is better safe than sorry.
  6. Run Steam Achievement Manager and do whatever you want in it.

Also unlocks achievements with these games (and many more):

  • Unreal Tournament 3
  • Age of Chivalry
  • Empire: Total War
  • And Yet It Moves
  • Left 4 Dead (L4D)
  • Day of Defeat: Source (DoD:S)

FAQ: Valve bannination for using this?

Exceedingly doubtful. The folks at Valve are very much aware that this exists. It used to be a don’t ask, don’t tell situation, and by using the unlocker you aren’t affecting other’s gameplay. Although with the Scout update, Valve threatened to take our toys away for a week if we used it. So no, you’re not going to have your steam account banned, but it’s likely you’ll lose your unlockables for a couple of days following the release. It took valve 6 days to get around to removing my Scout unlocks, and I had them back in two days. Nobody has had any issues in the week after the scout update was released. A hollow threat if you ask me.

Are unlockers VAC bannable? No they are not. Firstly, the achievements unlockers ARE NOT EXPLOITS, they use a public API in the Source SDK which Valve has provided us with. They are not detected by VAC since they aren’t allowing players to cheat in any way.

But I’m wary that this is spyware/awful bad things will happen to my computer! ?

It’s clean. Check all the forums nobody’s ever had an issue with it. Check the comments from the previous scout patch, zero complaints. Click the “previously” link at the bottom of that post to see more comments, and so on back to the pyro patch.

  1. Epic Voice Guy says:

Actually, no one lost their unlocks for a week. Me and over 10 other people I know all used this and no one has been punished over it. Valve is attempting to create fear, uncertainty and doubt to manipulate players and it really is nothing more than a hollow threat.

Although, since they released the Steam Cloud integration for unlocks, all the unlocks have been wonky. I. E. some servers randomly not giving people their unlocks if they quit and rejoin the server, servers not being able to connect to the master server, and occasionally the master server going down randomly and people not getting their unlocks when it comes back up. They still seem to be ironing out the bugs with that, chances are you hit one that lasted a couple of days or were playing on a server that was being specifically effected by one of them.

  2. I suspect the steam achievement manager will become irrelevant later today when valve announces the headgear unlocks; how those headgear are unlocked is likely the same way the huntsman, ambassador, razorback, dead ringer and more will be “unlocked”

  3. Nathan says:

It doesn’t work, I’ve tried 5.0 and to no avail, looks like a new version will have to be done! You can get the achievements unlocked, but you’ll recieve no new weapons!

  4. Its supposed to be every 100 kills or something. They’re going to announce how this works tomorrow. For now just assume weapon drops are completely random.

    >It doesn’t work, I’ve tried 5.0 and to no avail, looks like a new version >will have to be done! You can get the achievements unlocked, but you’ll >recieve no new weapons!

It does not work for me either… I tried several times: TF2 off, TF2 on, in a server on TF2, they unlock all achievements, but in the loadout screen it says I haven’t found any weapons :S Strange,

  6. Did you even read the comments? Of coure it didn’t work. Valve untied achievements from weapon unlocks. Its most likely based off time and obscure statistics

Thanks for this most helpful answer. I’m sorry if I irritade you by making this question…..

  8. matt says:

I try to run the program but every time it says that the SAM.Picker has encountered an error and needs to close. Am I supposed to run SAM.Picker or SAM.Game? I tried both but the same problem happened with the SAM.Picker every time. Please help!

  9. Brad says:

It would appear that the most recent Steam update (12th June?) has changed something in the steamclient.dll.

SAM.Picker.exe crashes with a Report to Microsoft dialog, and I would pastebin the full error message but windows won’t let me copy it :(

    Hope you can fix this!

  10. admin says:

Rick, the guy who wrote it is on a bar crawl across Paraguay currently and will look into it later.

  12. Jacob says:

So (just double checking), we need to wait for a new update that will fix this crash on run bug?

  13. Jacob says:

Yes, it works fine, thank you for updating it.

  14. NeedHelp says:

    1. i installed a framework 3.5
    2. then i download the achievement manager 5.1 and extract it in empty folder, then i close all games VAC secure , restart steam and open the SAM.Game.exe it works, then in my steam are jus 1 game (TF2) ,i try to open it tf2 and i get an error ! ! !

  15. alsee? says:

speaking of sam picker when do you think making 5.3? cause tf2 has new achievements

  16. admin says:

I didn’t write SAM. These guys did: http://gib.me/sam/ 5.2 is out and supports the Engineer update.

  17. isthatright says:

as I’ve said in a previous post on the scout update, I forgot I was running SAM when my friend sent me an invite to an L4D2 VAC secured server, thus “Exit any active VAC protected games if any are running” rule is broken. I will keep you guys posted as to whether I do receive a VAC ban for running a game while having SAM on. (hopefully i wont be banned)
